DO I NEED TO CLEAN MY HRV (AIR EXCHANGER)?

We have discovered that many Heat Recovery Ventilator systems (commonly known as air exchangers) often get inadvertently neglected.  They are out of sight; therefore, out of mind – many have never been cleaned!  Spring is a great time to have it cleaned!

Let’s explain!

A Heat Recovery Ventilator is a complete whole house ventilation system that incorporates a supply motor and an exhaust motor in one unit.  It is designed to bring a continuous supply of fresh air into the home while exhausting an equal amount of “contaminated air”.

The HRV distributes the fresh air throughout the home using ductwork that is completely separate from your furnace. The best example we have heard is to think of the HRV like the lungs of the home; it takes in fresh outdoor air to distribute throughout the home while at the same time exhausting or expelling stale indoor air. As such, a properly cleaned HRV can significantly improve indoor air quality by removing humidity, carbon dioxide, cooking odours, dust and allergens, and even animal dander/odors from the inside of the home and replacing this stale air with a fresh supply from outside the home.

Therefore, if these vents are quite dirty, blocked and/or covered with mould growth, it is simple to see that this fresh air isn’t so fresh!
